Nels Davig DovreNels Davig Dovre is a music teacher whose passion is to help humans develop some of the very skills we will delve into this week. The power of focus and releasing distractions are examples we will learn as tools for our meditation practice. As we connect with the way sound and stillness are the components of the world we get to be a part of, it is important to prepare your mind to find ways to tune in to your surroundings on and off of the dance floor. As Nels has created and performed with his band GoodcaT, he has learned how sound can impact masses towards internal and external human expression. For the last 4 years he has been studying Yoga and Meditation with Atman Yoga Academy, an international yoga school based in Romania. He has recently completed a year long teacher training. He is looking forward to being able to share insights that you can incorporate into your meditation experience. He hopes to aide our MasaFam’s way of connecting with our true selves, in order to positively impact your Latin dance communities.

Why This Retreat is For YouThis retreat is for people who are looking for a detailed course of training and are interested in working on the finer points of dance often overlooked in classes. It is about learning the how, not the what, in dance. And most of all, it is for people looking for a break from life and personal reflection. We have dancers of all skill levels and ages who attend. However, all attendees of the retreat must know the basics of Salsa On 2 (timing, cross body lead, inside turn, outside turn). Please feel free to contact us with any questions you might have.

Cambridge Athletic Club Re-OpeningOnce the CAC is able to open and conduct business, we'll be having discussions with them about the saftey protocols that they'll be implementing in response to COVID-19, and what we'll need to do to be in compliance.
-
Student SafetyOnce we confirm the changes that we'll need to implement within the physical Dance School, we'll communicate these adaptations to our current students to see the degree to which they feel comfortable returning under these safety protocols. After that, it'll be a matter of identifying the consensus among students who would be able to take our physical classes.
-
Virtual PlatformsOnce we better understand how and which students of our physical Dance School would feel comfortable returning, we'll brainstorm around extending our physical classes (i.e. by way of live-stream, etc.) to our long-distance students or to our students who may not feel comfortable returning physically right away. After that, we'll be in trial-and-error/implementation mode to develop operations to pinpoint how physical and virtual can coexist, so everyone who wants to remain connected feels it. One LOVE.
-
Staff SafetyOnce we confirm how the CAC will be implementing its new protocols, we'll be checking in with our coaching and front desk staff to see the degree to which they feel comfortable returning after considering the practices that the CAC will put into place. After that, it'll be a matter of reviewing our School Programming to see what changes need to be adapted on our end to remain in compliance with the CAC.

Qigong & Meditation ProgramQigong & Meditation Program (free and open to the community) Started in the fall of 2018, the Qigong & Meditation program serves our community with twice per week virtual sessions that are free and open to all. The incorporation of Qigong & Meditation practices instills techniques allowing greater awareness and management of one’s own emotions. How does this help beginner dance students? If you’re new to either partnered dancing or multi-layered/polyrhythmic music (such as Salsa), the most challenging aspects of learning this artform is usually finding the beat and connecting with your partner. This program teaches the incorporation of techniques that develop a greater awareness of your own emotions. You will literally be able to “hear” yourself more clearly. This clarity heightens your sensory perception which better prepares you to overcome the two challenges often faced by new dancers: Hearing and connecting to the music You’ll be able to distinguish the percussion elements within the orchestration of the music. This is key when trying to understand the musical concepts that our coaches teach from identifying the clave, finding the one, and the groove of dancing salsa on2 timing. Connecting with your dance partner A heightened sensory perception also makes you more receptive to the emotional and energetic output being channeled by your partner (involuntarily or intentionally). You can now feel your partner as clearly as you can hear the music. Being in tune with both the music and your partner is what amplifies the joyous experience on the dance floor. How does this help experienced dancers and performers? As new students continue their technical training, they’ll develop a proficiency for music interpretation and movement mechanics. Once their skills reach a certain point, the next transition in the evolution of their dance is Self-Expression. The challenge that students at this stage of development usually experience is a difficulty in finding their own creative expression. As described earlier, this program equips students with tools to better manage and have a greater awareness of their own emotions. Initially, incorporating these practices will allow you to “hear” yourself more clearly. A continued dedication to the practice will refine what you can “hear” into something much more pronounced and discernable-your own voice-the core of your creation. Understanding the Self to this depth is what allows students to overcome this challenge as they begin performing or choreographing. Finding your own creative expression The depth of understanding one’s Self is the beginning of Self Expression. At this phase of consciousness, depth meets clarity and removes blockages that keep us from being connected to our core, which is the depth from which true artistry is created and expressed. How does this help everyone else (non-dancers)? For everyone, these mindfulness practices provide tools and techniques that raise our emotional intelligence (EQ). Our EQ attributes the awareness and management we have of ourselves and of others. For more information on emotional intelligence, check out this helpful website reference HERE. Click HERE for more info about our Qigong & Meditation program.

For Everyone Else (Non-Dancers)For everyone else (non-dancers): Mindfulness practices provide tools to raise our emotional intelligence (EQ) - the awareness and management we have of ourselves and of others. For more information on EQ, check out this helpful website reference HERE. Click HERE for more info about our Qigong & Meditation program.
-
For Experienced Dancers & PerformersFor experienced dancers and performers: Develop a proficiency for music interpretation and movement mechanics, leading to more creative self-expression. This program builds emotional insight and greater control of your faculties. Learn to “hear” yourself more clearly and refine your own voice as you grow into performing or choreographing. Creative Self-Expression The depth of understanding one’s Self is the beginning of Self Expression. At this phase of consciousness, depth meets clarity and removes blockages that keep us from connecting to our core, which is the depth from which true artistry is created and expressed.
-
For Beginner Dance StudentsFor beginner dance students: If you’re new to either partnered dancing or multi-layered/polyrhythmic music such as Salsa, connecting with your partner and finding the beat may feel challenging. This program assists as follows: Music Connection Build awareness of time and learn to distinguish the percussion elements within the orchestration of the music. This is key to understanding the musical concepts that our coaches teach - identifying the clave, finding the downbeat, and the groove of salsa on2 timing. Partner Connection Develop a heightened sensory perception for receptive emotional and energetic output channeled by your partner. Foster this synergy between the music and your partner.
-
For Everyone Else (Non-Dancers)For everyone else (non-dancers): Mindfulness practices provide tools to raise our emotional intelligence (EQ) - the awareness and management we have of ourselves and of others. For more information on EQ, check out this helpful website reference HERE.

Below is a list of the classes we often teach: Afro Cuban Fusion Afro Cuban dance classes explore a fusion of the movements & culture of folkloric Cuban dance. One stage for all skills offered. Bachata Bachata originates from the Dominican Republic. Our classes focus on musical groove and partner connection. Two stages are offered. Cha Cha No longer a limited intensive, Cha Cha now joins our schedule full-time! Attention will be placed on: cha cha music timing, partner connection, footwork & partnerwork repertoire building. Cuban Son Son is a dance and music style that originated in the eastern part of Cuba. Son spread across the island, Caribbean, and later to New York to become the root of what we now call Salsa. Son also provides the structural base for Casino, commonly known as Cuban Salsa. In this weekly class we begin to develop basic concepts and musicality for Son social dancing. Dance Fusion Incorporate various styles of dance into your salsa repertoire and creative process to support the intuitive expression of your movement and dance. Movement Technique Focus on footwork technique, weight placement, and musical awareness. Build up stronger, faster footwork while learning to build more rhythmic connections. Rumba Rumba is a Cuban folkloric, secular dance. Our classes focus on individual movement isolation and dance fusion. One stage for all skills offered. Salsa Masacote teaches NY Style Salsa On 2, centered around the Tumbao rhythm of the congas. Classes are separated into four stages of partnering and footwork. Masacote newcomers with prior Salsa On 2 experience may begin in Salsa 1+. All others must start in Salsa 1. And most of all, it is for people looking for a break from life and personal reflection while working and meeting other fabulous dancers from around the world in a safe and welcoming space. We have dancers of all skill levels and ages who attend. However, all attendees of the retreat should be familiar with the basics of Salsa On 2 (timing, cross body lead, inside turn, outside turn).

He fell in love with Cuban music and dance in his teenage years and began training intensively with MetaMovements Latin Dance Company. Jonathan progressively developed into an instructor for the school, teaching various Cuban styles and managing performance and weekly classes. He continued his intensive training in Afro-Cuban and Cuban Modern Dance through mentors at the company and Cuban instructors through visits in Cuba and abroad. If he knows it he wants to share that knowledge, and if he doesn’t then he is trying to learn it. Jonathan Burke 2Jonathan Burke, born to Jamaican immigrant parents, grew up with a love for hip hop/reggae music and various modalities in the arts. He began training at the Masacote Dance School and joined the MASA2 Coaching Team in Fall 2016. Masacote’s connection to Cuban culture has resonated deeply within Jonathan. As such, Jonathan found himself dancing anything with a clave: Son, Casino, Danzon, Chachachá, Salsa, Mambo, Rumba (Yambu, Guaguanco, Columbia), Yoruba — you name it! If he knows it he wants to share that knowledge, and if he doesn’t then he is trying to learn it. Jonathan joined the Masacote School staff in the Summer of 2017 before relocating to DC to continue his training.
